Kathleen Doherty (she/her) is a producer, choreographer, dance artist, and educator based in Kjipuktuk/Halifax. Kathleen co-founded Rooted Dance Projects (previously Votive Dance) in 2012 and has worked as Artistic Director since the company’s inception. Her production, WHODUNIT?, featured live music composed by Andrew Jackson and premiered in 2022 (Maritime tour 2024). Kathleen recently created BASSline with Rooted Dance Projects (Halifax premiere 2023 with Live Art Dance, 2022 Minneapolis premiere). Kathleen is also the current Artistic Director of the Young Company of Halifax Dance (YoCo). Through this position, she is working to expand the community YoCo serves for young dancers, and the professional artists they engage with.
Kathleen’s choreography has been presented by Live Art Dance, Kinetic, Rhythmically Speaking Dance (Minneapolis), Connection Dance Works, and Rooted Dance Projects, among others. Kathleen’s performance credits include Rooted Dance Projects, Mocean Dance, FoDAR, Alberta Dance Festival, Kinetic, and Connection Dance Works.
Kathleen holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. She studied for two years in DJD’s Professional Training Program (Calgary). Currently, she is a regular instructor with The Maritime Conservatory, Halifax Dance, House of Eights, The Dance Institute, Rooted Dance Projects, and a part-time faculty member with The Fountain School of Performing Arts (Dalhousie University). Kathleen is proud to be a working artist mom to her 6 year-old son, Cillian.
